How to Start a Blog Without Computer Skills

When I was thinking about starting a blog, I had so many ideas and no way to implement them. I spent weeks researching Pinterest on “How To Start a Blog” posts. I was especially interested in what it took to create a successful blog that I could turn into a business. A business that could help me to generate passive income in the future and help me life the life I have always dreamed.

So, how did I start my own blog? Don’t worry, I am going to show you, step by step, it’s wicked simple! And if you’re not tech-savvy, no worries, you don’t need to be, I’m not. Just set aside a little time, grab a computer, pen, paper and a way to pay (I’ll explain why), and start your blog now!

This post contains affiliate links. This means that if you click on a link and make a purchase at that retailer, I will receive a (small) percentage of sales at no cost to you.

Don’t put it off!

Having a blog has allowed me, in a wicked short time, to work from home when I want, to travel whenever (and wherever) I want, I am able to set my own schedule, spend time with family and friends, feel accomplished and fulfilled, and more. I get to live the life I have always dreamed, and you could too. Why wait any longer?

The best way to learn is to just dive in and do it- DIY it until you are killing it!

You can sign up for Bluehost and start your own blog, right now, for just $3.95 a month!

Sign Up for Hosting.

Sign-up for Bluehost Web Hosting here!

This is the most important part of the process, finding a host site. A host site is like renting a space on the internet to put your blog. You need hosting to run a website, no host, no site. I chose Bluehost. Why? I looked at reviews of other hosting sites (for hours), nothing compares, and EVERY professional blogger recommends Bluehost.

PLUS: Bluehost is super easy to use, making it very easy to create a WordPress blog. Bluehost offers tech support. WordPress through Bluehost is free. You will be self-hosted with Bluehost. (If you want to monetize your blog, then you will want to be self-hosted.) You will appear much more professional to readers, companies, and others, if you are self-hosted on Bluehost.Signing up for Bluehost makes all the difference!

There are three plans, I chose the Basic Plan because I was just starting out, but as you grow your blog you can always upgrade. The Basic Plan is $3.95 a month right now, including a FREE domain name (I know of no other hosting sites doing this). And, if you decide not to go through with it, you get a full refund.

You may be thinking you can get web hosting for cheaper, or even free, don’t do that! There are so many reasons why those cheaper hosting sites could be a bad idea for your blog. If you ever want to make money with your blog, freelance, turn your blog into a business or have a professional blog, in any way, then you should setup a WordPress blog and pay for hosting with Bluehost. I was able to make the money back that I paid for hosting pretty quickly. Bluehost is well worth paying for and I’m sure you will be able to make your money back too.

Get started with Bluehost here!

Create Your Domain Name.

Once you sign up for Bluehost, you will need to create your domain name. I would give this some serious thought. Finding a name can be difficult at first, make sure it’s something easily said, and spelled (nothing long). You want your blog easily remembered. Bluehost will help, kind of, they will let you know if your domain is taken or not, but the rest is up to you.

Fill Out Some Personal Stuff.

Fill out your personal information. This is all you.

Choose Your Hosting Package.

Make sure you have the right package picked out for you needs when you sign up for Bluehost.

The extra add-ons for security at the end aren’t really necessary. Unless your site gets huge, don’t worry about those for now. I suggest just installing Jetpack once you’ve installed WordPress. Jetpack, a free WordPress plugin, that will help protect your site from attackers.

The only item you may want to pay for when it comes to your site is Domain Privacy Protection, it is only $0.99 per month and keeps your contact information safe.

Once you sign up with Bluehost, other than Domain Privacy Protection, you do not need the other items that Bluehost sells, so uncheck any of the other extras that are listed.

I want explain why you should purchase, at least, a 12 month hosting plan. Month-to-month is less effective hosting for professional websites. Also, by signing up for a minimum of 12 months, you will receive a free domain name, lower pricing, and you won’t have to deal with an expired website after each month. When your site expires, if hosting is not renewed or if your credit card expires, then your website is down. With a downed site you risk losing business (visitors/traffic) and when you pay on a month-to-month basis, this has a greater probability of occurring. It’s also way more expensive to pay month-by-month over one lump sum. The more years you sign up with Bluehost, the less you pay, saving you money!

You can also receive a refund at any time. Bluehost offers a full refund within 30 days and then pro-rated after that. Whatever you don’t use, you’ll get back. There really is no risk!

Billing Info. Payment. Password.

Next is your billing info! (You do this part on your own.) Once that’s entered in, and you have paid, check your email for a confirmation and to choose your Bluehost password.

. Install WordPress.

Once you have chosen a password, you can sign into your new Bluehost account. Signing in will take you to your Bluehost home page (cPanel).

On this homepage, you’ll want to click on the icon that says “Install WordPress.” It is located under ‘Websites’ as the second orange icon. WordPress is where you’ll be writing your content.

From there it’s wicked simple! Just hit the ‘START’ button to begin installing WordPress.

During the WordPress install, you will have to enter in your domain name and site (admin) info, and click the final button to install. The site (admin) info will be a new password and username for logging into your WordPress site. Make sure your username and password is super secure! Use capitals, characters, and numbers, to create an obscure user name and password for your site. (DO NOT USE ‘admin’ as your password or username!)

Alternative Directions for Installing WordPress.

When you are in your Bluehost homepage (cPanel, this link is in your welcome email from Bluehost), find and click on the image that says “One Click Install”. Then, click on the ‘WordPress’ icon on the next page located under “Blogs”. Now click on the ‘Start’ button. This will begin the WordPress installation.

In the installation process, you will have to input the domain you will want to install WordPress on. In the dropdown menu click to the domain you plan on using.

You will see “Advanced Options.” This is where you input your username and password for your WordPress website. Choose something secure. You will want to check “Automatically create a new database for this installation” too, unless you already have a different database (if you don’t know, then you probably do not). Click “Install Now.”

Remember, save your username and password.

Log In to WordPress.

Now, you can take your admin URL and enter it into your web browser.

And lastly you can log into your new WordPress blog account!

Congratulations! You just installed WordPress and have your very own blog. You will now have to work on the design and content, of course, but you are on your way now. Good luck!

I hope that signing up for Bluehost was as easy for you as it was for me. If not, if you have any questions at all, feel free to leave them down in the comments.

WordPress, some helpful hints.

To sign into your WordPress account, you will want to save the WordPress login information that you receive in a separate email. This email will include your WordPress login URL, your username, and your password. You want to keep this email safe. The URL you will use is separate from everyone else’s. It is the only way you can access your WordPress account.

If you want to create a new post, just hover over the “Posts” option on the left side of your page and click “New Post.” When creating a post, click on “Media” to download images.

If you want to add a page, simply click on “Page.”

To add items to your sidebar, footer, and/or other areas, you can go to “Appearance,” then “Widgets”.

The “Plugins” option is on the left side as well. You will want to hover over it until you see the option, “Add New.” Click on that, now you’ll have the option to see suggested plugins and search for the ones you’ve heard about. (Bluehost and WordPress themes require, and suggest, using specific plugins depending on the design. These will be suggested to you on your admin site.)

Jetpack is a plugin that protects your site from attackers/spammers, optimizes the speed of your site, and you’ll get the option to see your blog’s stats. Stats will allow you to see how many viewers have been on your site for that day, what sites they’re coming from, and how many views each post on your blog has for that day, wicked cool.

Now if you’re looking for a theme for your Bluehost/WordPress site, then I’d suggest looking at the free, and paid for, options on Bluehost. For not much money you can choose a ready to go theme, or have someone find a theme for you (and design the site to better suit you).

Or, there are free themes through WordPress you can use too. When you are logged into your WordPress site go to “Appearance” on the left-hand side and click on “Themes”. You then have the options of activating whichever one you are interested in and testing out. By doing this, you can start designing your website easily! Another option would be to buy a premade blog design. Great premade designs go for as little as $45! A premade design is the quickest and easiest design option.
